As someone who with little experience decided to do (attempt to do) comrades next year I told myself the least that I can do regarding comrades this year is watch the whole race.
So, at 4:20 I woke up made myself a cup of coffee and started watching the livestream. I was determined to watch from the first person finishing to the very last. I did it so I could witness the absolute horrors everyone had warned me about at Comrades.
So, I sat down and saw thousands of people from different walks of life united by this one tough challenge. I had tears in my eyes. Then after a bit I watched as the masses started crossing the start line.
As I watched I learned so many wonderful stories about comrades’ traditions that I did not know like the importance of greeting Arthur.
And things that would prepare me for next year
Watching my comrades amused me; the top 20 finishers showed what the human body can really endure with proper training and preparation, and honestly, I hope to finish early one day.
But the people who inspired me most the 12-hour finisher. They showed me that no matter what, with determination and just pure will anything can be done. After hours awake, moving and in the sun, they still made it. And for me that’s the inspiration to be one of them to finish comrades knowing that you really deserve it.
Don’t get me wrong I am scared and sh*tting myself for comrades obviously wish fully thinking I will make it. But In the next month’s coming I will be reminding myself of the late finishers and even the people who didn’t get the chance to finish but was so close they will be my drive and my motivation, because I as most am only a beginner and you have to start somewhere and being at comrades as a participants that is really something that most people cant even say they have done. And that takes a lot of balls.
So, with wishful thinking, clever training and manifesting. I hope to be at comrades next year and be a part of these powerful people.
